Engagement rate calculator
Paste followers, average likes and comments. Get the rate, the tier, and where it sits against commonly cited bands.
Bands are commonly cited general ranges and vary by platform and niche. Smaller accounts usually post higher rates; a 2% rate on a 500k account can be strong.
How engagement rate is calculated
The standard formula divides average interactions per post by followers: (likes + comments [+ saves or shares]) ÷ followers × 100. It is the quickest sanity check on whether an audience is real and paying attention, which is why brands and agencies ask for it before rates.
What it does not tell you
It says nothing about who the audience is (location, age, buying intent), whether comments are substantive, or how much of the engagement is reciprocal from other creators. Treat it as the first filter, then look at audience demographics, comment quality, view-through on video, and past branded posts.
Reach-based alternatives
Platforms increasingly show reach and views rather than followers. Engagement per reach (interactions ÷ reach) or per view is often a fairer measure for video-first accounts, and it is what we look at when vetting creators for a campaign.
What is a good engagement rate on Instagram in 2026?
Commonly cited bands put 1–3% as average and 3–6% as good, but the useful comparison is against creators of similar size in the same niche. Follower count, content format and platform all shift the baseline.
Should I include saves and shares?
For video-first and educational content, yes. Saves and shares signal intent more strongly than likes. Be consistent: compare creators using the same formula.
Why does a small account have a higher rate?
Smaller audiences are usually closer to the creator and see a larger share of posts. Rates typically fall as accounts grow, which is normal, not a red flag.
Can engagement rate be faked?
Yes, through engagement pods and purchased interactions. Look for comment quality, the ratio of comments to likes, spikes that do not match posting history, and audience location that does not match the content.
